Following a crushing 128-102 defeat against the Miami Heat in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Boston Celtics now find themselves in a 0-3 series deficit. None of the 149 teams that have found themselves in this situation in the past have managed to overturn the deficit. Confronted with this prospect, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla has taken the responsibility for the situation upon himself.
“I just didn’t have them ready to play,” Mazzulla said. “I have to get them in a better place to be ready to play, and that’s on me.”
In virtually every answer he gave, Mazzulla reiterated his sense of guilt, emphasizing that the loss was on him for his failure to adequately prepare Boston for its most significant game of the season. He also acknowledged that Boston’s defensive identity, which had been second in the league during the regular season, seems to have gotten lost during the playoffs.
“Yeah, I think some of that defensive identity has been lost,” Mazzulla said, “and we have to get that back.”
Despite the bleak prospects, Mazzulla and the Celtics are not giving up. His focus is now on trying to prepare the Celtics for a historic feat: overturning a 0-3 series deficit. The fourth game will be held on Tuesday, and it will be Boston’s final opportunity to stave off elimination.
Although they’re staring down a formidable challenge, Mazzulla’s faith in his team remains unshaken. With his words, he sends a clear message to his players and their fans: They’re down, but not out. Now, it’s up to the Celtics to rise to the challenge and make history.
