Finishing five times in the All-NBA First Team, Luka Doncic has often been among the top candidates for MVP, never managing to win it. Last year Jokic won it by a 75-vote gab from the Slovenian, who finished third behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. However, the averages recorded, are still those of an MVP: 33.9 points, 9.3 rebounds and 9.8 assists. Not forgetting the extraordinary palyoff run that took his Dallas Mavericks all the way to the NBA Finals, later lost to the too-strong Boston Celtics. Gilbert Arenas, former talent of the Washington Wizards, came back to talk about Luka Doncic and the MVP award, declaring him already as the winner of the award next year:
“I don’t want to load him up with that kind of pressure, but I would be surprised if he didn’t have a triple-double average. He had a resounding assist average and now he has a catch-and-shoot shooter like Klay Thompson by his side. A lot of assists will come even without his efforts. You should have a triple-double average. He will be the leading candidate for MVP. He will do something that has never been done before, which is to finish with an average triple-double.”
