Having advanced to the second round of the FIBA Europe Cup, Anwil Włocławek is ready to take their chance back again and fight for the European trophy.
The Rottweilers won the FIBA Europe Cup competition in the 2022/2023 season, playing thrilling games against well-known brands like German Bamberg or Turkish Gaziantep. In the big final double-match, Anwil Włocławek beat Cholet at home and away. In the circumstances of being witnessed by the 5000 spectators from the French side and having supported from the 50 fans from Włocławek, Anwil took their first European title, lifting off the great trophy.
That was the first and only European big stage trophy for both Anwil Włocławek and Polish basketball in general. But Włocławek is not only worth visiting because of their bunch of success (three Polish championships, eight vice-championships, three bronzes, four Polish Cups, three Supercups, ENBL league championship and FIBA Europe Cup, not mentioning those minor ones), but also because of the city’s touristic advantages.
The history of the city leads us to the late Bronze Age – in fact, early Iron Age (1300 BCE – 500 BCE). Archaeological excavations conducted on the current city site uncovered the remains of a settlement belonging to the Lusatian culture, as well as evidence of a settlement of early Pomeranian culture which had been established.
The original settlement was founded in the 9th century and its early inhabitants were occupied with agriculture and crafts. In the 10th century it became part of the emerging Polish state under the Piast dynasty. The good location – by the river of Vistula – helped a lot in developing the city. Already under the rule of Bolesław I the Brave it was one of Poland’s most important administrative centers, as mentioned in the Gesta principum Polonorum chronicle from the 1110s, which also happens to be the oldest known mention of the city. The name is derived from the Old Polish male name Włodzisław, possibly the founder of Włocławek. A few centuries later, the biggest and the greatest relic was built – it is the Cathedral Basilica, dated to the 14th century. The 20th century brought the construction of the great (second biggest in Poland) dam on the river.
So that’s how the story began when it comes to the city. A thousand years later the history is being created by industry, trade and… sports. Basketball, indeed.
On December 4, Anwil Włocławek start the second round of the FIBA Europe Cup. Is this new adventure leading to another step of greatness?
