ALBA Berlin is leaving the EuroLeague and will compete in the Basketball Champions League going forward. President Dr. Axel Schweitzer explained the move, citing “million burned annually” by EuroLeague clubs without a self-sustaining model.
In a statement, he wrote, “We are building something different — a system where success on the court is paired with financial responsibility off it. Prestige is short-term; we aim to last for a century.”
The Berlin-based club had been part of EuroLeague competitions since 2000 but now chooses structural change over tradition.
