University of Syracuse has announced that, after 47 years, Jim Boeheim will step down as head coach of the basketball team. Adrian Autry, currently the associate head coach, will take his place.
Boeheim, 78 years old, has been a part of Syracuse since 1963, as a player. In 1969, he joined the university’s coaching staff as an assistant coach, and in 1976 became head coach, a role he has held until now.
A member of the Basketball Hall of Fame since 2005, Boeheim led Syracuse to the national title in 2003 with Carmelo Anthony. In addition, he has won three Olympic gold medals as an assistant coach for the United States national team in 2008, 2012, and 2016, and two FIBA World Cup gold medals in 2010 and 2014.
In total, Boeheim has led Syracuse to five Final Four appearances and ranks second in Division I victories.
