Adam Silver Open to 10-Minute Quarters in NBA

The commissioner supports shortening games to 40 minutes

NBA commissioner Adam Silver expressed support for reducing NBA games from 48 minutes to 40 by implementing 10-minute quarters. Speaking on The Dan Patrick Show, Silver noted that the NBA is the only league to play 48 minutes and suggested that a two-hour format would align better with modern television viewing habits.

However, coaches Tom Thibodeau and Michael Malone pushed back on the idea, arguing it would impact historical records and alter the purity of the game. “I hope we don’t turn this into a circus,” Malone said, emphasizing the importance of preserving the NBA’s traditions.

Silver also mentioned discussions about reducing free throws on three-point shooting fouls to two instead of three, another potential rule change under consideration.
