The dispute between Panathinaikos and Olympiacos has escalated again following the Piraeus club’s statement on the Despina Giannakopoulou case. Panathinaikos disputes its rival’s version and says prosecutors accepted as true the facts concerning offensive chants directed at Dimitris Giannakopoulos’ daughter.
According to Panathinaikos, the prosecutor accepted that the chants took place and that a related video was later posted on Olympiacos’ official channels. The dismissal of the complaint, the Greens argue, concerned the lack of defamatory intent attributed to the club over the video post, while proceedings were opened regarding the individuals who made the chants.
Panathinaikos responded sharply: “Instead of being ashamed and apologizing, Olympiacos issues inaccurate and ridiculous statements that insult the intelligence of anyone with a basic understanding.” The episode has therefore sparked another major clash between Greek basketball’s two biggest rivals.
