Giannakopoulos takes aim at expansion opponents: “Basketball is not a rich boys’ toy”

Dimitris Giannakopoulos has posted another message on Instagram following the Cernobbio meeting over the future of EuroLeague and NBA Europe. The Panathinaikos owner criticized Olympiacos and other clubs that oppose expanding European basketball.

“Players, coaches, fans, owners and management of European basketball: all together we have turned the sport we love into a competition where the NBA, I repeat the NBA, the top league in the world, wants to invest and make EuroLeague a part of their world,” Giannakopoulos wrote.

The Panathinaikos owner added: “With huge respect but also proud of what we have finally, with no Jordi, achieved, we must together find a solution.” He then targeted the opposing position: “Teams like Olympiacos today and a couple of other teams have no interest in expanding the sport of basketball.” Giannakopoulos concluded: “They still believe that success is how much money you lose at the end of the year. Basketball is not a rich boys’ toy.”
