AS Monaco Basket set to appear before court
The situation surrounding AS Monaco Basket appears to have reached a critical point. The French champions are expected to appear before the Monaco Court of First Instance on Friday, October 2, and according to Nice-Matin, the likely outcome could be the filing for insolvency.
It would represent a dramatic ending to a chaotic summer for Roca Team, just months after the club completed the first quadruple in LNB history, winning the title on June 24 at Paris’ Adidas Arena in a memorable final that also featured the improbable return of Mike James.
From historic success to financial crisis
The situation deteriorated rapidly after the championship.
The first major issue was Monaco’s failure to secure participation in France’s professional competitions following the financial problems of former president Aleksej Fedorychev, who reportedly delayed his departure before eventually cutting ties with the club.
The situation then became even more complicated when the expected takeover by Jamal Mashburn collapsed. The former NBA All-Star had long been viewed as a potential solution, but reportedly backed out at the last moment after becoming concerned about the club’s liabilities.
ABA League option also failed to save Monaco
With the doors to France’s professional leagues closed, Monaco attempted to find an alternative solution in Nationale 1.
The arrival of investor Thomas Kurk, who had reportedly agreed to inject €10 million into the club, allowed Roca Team to prepare an ambitious roster for the third tier, including Axel Toupane, Luka Asceric, Gavin Kensmil and Kenny Kasiama, as well as the possible continuation of club icon Yakuba Ouattara.
However, the FFBB rejected Monaco’s application to participate in Nationale 1 after the club failed to submit all the required documentation within the deadline.
ABA League was open to Monaco, but the government was not
Following the federation’s decision, Monaco explored further alternatives, including participation in the ABA League, potentially through its second division.
According to Nice-Matin, the company operating the competition was reportedly favorable to Monaco’s inclusion and had even sent the French champions a participation proposal.
However, the idea reportedly did not receive support from the Monaco government, which was concerned about its relationship with France.
Thomas Kurk withdraws as the project collapses
Meanwhile, the sporting project has effectively disappeared.
Training sessions led by Markoishvili and Gladyr, who had been preparing to take charge in Nationale 1, have stopped. The players have moved elsewhere and, most importantly, principal shareholder Thomas Kurk has withdrawn from the project.
The jobs of the club’s 22 employees are also reportedly at risk.
Bankruptcy or judicial restructuring?
With no sporting activity and therefore no significant sources of revenue, judicial liquidation currently appears to be the most likely scenario.
Such an outcome would be a remarkable collapse for a project that climbed from Nationale 2 to the EuroLeague Final in just fourteen years.
According to Nice-Matin, AS Monaco has nevertheless challenged the FFBB decision before the administrative court, although its chances of success are reportedly very slim.
The ABA League option has not been completely ruled out and could potentially leave the door open to restructuring rather than liquidation. That could, in theory, allow Monaco to return to the professional scene in 2027-28, potentially through the purchase of a league license if such an opportunity becomes available.
