According to Jovan Buha, the veteran guard was ready to continue his career in a different situation

Marcus Smart’s departure from the Los Angeles Lakers was reportedly influenced by his desire for a fresh start. “My understanding is that, to some degree, Smart was ready to move forward in a different situation,” Jovan Buha said, noting that differing accounts exist.

Smart subsequently signed a two-year, $13 million contract with the Houston Rockets, reuniting with Ime Udoka, who coached him during Boston’s run to the 2022 NBA Finals.

The 32-year-old averaged 9.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals during his only season with the Lakers. Los Angeles later reshaped its perimeter rotation by adding Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton, Ziaire Williams and Matisse Thybulle.
