Erik Spoelstra encourages NBA players to represent their national teams

Spoelstra urges NBA players to embrace international basketball opportunities. highlighting the benefits of international basketball for player development and NBA preparation.

USA Basketball Men’s National Team and Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra has encouraged NBA players to embrace the opportunity to represent their countries, stressing the importance of international basketball for both development and preparation for the NBA season.

Erik Spoelstra: “Playing for their countries is what they’re really passionate about”

Spoelstra’s comments came as two of his Miami Heat players, Italy’s Simone Fontecchio and Serbia’s Nikola Jovic, faced each other in a crucial FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Qualifiers game in Pesaro.

“Playing for their countries is what they’re really passionate about. That’s what I love seeing,” Spoelstra told FIBA.

The Heat coach also emphasized the opportunity for players to take on different responsibilities with their national teams and continue developing their games.

“Secondly, it’s an opportunity to play a different role and grow. I mean, these are playoff games. The level and the intensity of these games is terrific. We always encourage our guys to play for their countries. One because it’s the passion and the excitement around it, but also it prepares you for an NBA season better than anything else.”

International basketball can help NBA players develop

For Spoelstra, following his players during international duty is about more than simply looking at their statistics. The Miami coach pays attention to their physical condition, how they adapt to different teammates and which areas they can improve before returning for NBA training camp.

Jovic, for example, has the opportunity to play alongside Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic with Serbia, providing him with another valuable experience at international level.

International basketball has also played an important role in the development of several NBA stars. Kevin Durant was named MVP of the 2010 FIBA Basketball World Cup after leading the United States to gold, while Steph Curry and Kyrie Irving benefited from representing Team USA at the 2014 World Cup.

Other international stars, including Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Luka Doncic, have similarly used FIBA competition to develop their games and gain valuable experience.

Spoelstra explains Fontecchio’s impact with Italy

Spoelstra’s attention is particularly focused on Fontecchio and Jovic, with the Heat coach highlighting the impact international competition has had on both players.

He recalled first becoming interested in Fontecchio while scouting Italy during the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup as an assistant with Team USA.

“One of the reasons I really recruited Simo [Fontecchio] was because I had to scout Italy when I was an assistant for Team USA. He was playing great in that tournament, and I was like, ‘Hey, this guy is a free agent, or we can get him in a trade. We’re interested’,” Spoelstra said.

Nikola Jovic continues to grow with Serbia

Spoelstra also believes that Jovic has continued to develop through his experiences with the Serbian national team.

The young forward has taken on an increasingly important role with Serbia, something Spoelstra believes has benefited his development and will ultimately help him when he returns to Miami.

“And for Niko [Jovic], he’s a young player, so each year he has played for the national team, he has gotten better, with a bigger role. He’s starting now, so I think it has been great for him as well.”
