Draymond Green has weighed in on whether winning an NBA MVP should carry more value than a championship. The four-time champion believes the comparison changes when discussing a player who leads his team to the title as its primary option.
“No one is trying to argue about the 11th or 12th man. But a first option, à la Jalen Brunson, or MVP — that’s the actual argument,” Green said on The Draymond Green Show. He then cited Dirk Nowitzki, who won the 2007 MVP before leading Dallas to the 2011 championship.
“I would love to know which one he loves most. One thing’s for certain: people talk about Dirk’s championship in 2011 far more than they talk about his MVP in ’07.” Green’s position contrasts with Tracy McGrady’s view that MVP carries greater individual weight because a championship depends on factors such as roster construction, coaching and injuries.
