Dennis Schroder has already started thinking about the final chapter of his career. The 32-year-old Charlotte Hornets point guard wants to remain in the NBA for a few more years, but he already knows where he would like to finish his playing days: Braunschweig, the city where he grew up and began his basketball journey. Speaking on the OMR podcast, Schroder also explained why he would not be interested in returning to Europe to play for an established EuroLeague powerhouse.
“People often ask me if I could return to play in Europe, especially in the EuroLeague. But in that case, I would help another club become bigger. I would rather return to Braunschweig, where everything started, and play there.”
Schroder, who is also the majority shareholder of his hometown team, admitted that the financial landscape of the NBA could nevertheless affect his plans and convince him to extend his career in the league.
“I’ve heard that NBA salaries will increase again in 2028. Obviously, it’s not just about money, but if they put $10, $15 or $20 million a year on the table, then I might think about it a little longer.”
The German guard is also well aware of the fierce competition in the NBA and the risks associated with reaching free agency without a contract.
“After this season, my goal will be to sign again. Every year, 30 new players come in and 30 have to leave. If you reach that point without a contract, regardless of your level, it can happen that you don’t get another one.”
For now, Schroder remains focused on the NBA and wants to make the most of his final years at the highest level. His goal is to continue competing, secure another significant contract and only then return to Braunschweig, closing his career where it all began.
