According to The Athletic, the four-time MVP could choose to live in New York City and travel to the Sixers’ facilities by helicopter.

One of the most intriguing aspects surrounding LeBron James’ move to the Philadelphia 76ers is where he will live. According to The Athletic, the NBA superstar may decide not to relocate to Philadelphia and could instead remain in New York City, commuting to the Sixers’ arena or practice facility in Camden, New Jersey.

The distance between New York and Philadelphia is around 100 miles (160 kilometers), and James could use a helicopter to reduce travel time. A one-way trip would take approximately 45 minutes and cost around $4,000.

The expense would likely not be an issue for the four-time MVP, who has earned roughly $584 million in NBA salary alone during his career. However, the logistics would be far from simple. Considering 41 home games and two helicopter trips per game, the total cost of commuting between home and the arena would exceed $300,000 per season, without including practices, cancellations or possible overnight stays.

The biggest challenge would be the weather. Helicopter flights between New York and Philadelphia require ideal conditions, with fog, thunderstorms, snowstorms, icing or strong winds potentially preventing takeoff. During the 2025-26 NBA season, between October and April, New York recorded 11 days with wind gusts above 40 miles per hour, while Philadelphia had 33 such days.

James would not be the first NBA player to live away from the city where he played. JJ Redick commuted from Brooklyn during his time with the Sixers, while decades earlier Wilt Chamberlain lived in New York while playing for Philadelphia.

If helicopter travel was not possible, the alternative would be driving, but the route along Interstate 95, one of the busiest highways in the United States, could turn into a multi-hour journey depending on traffic.

For a player with LeBron’s strict pregame routine and preparation habits, the daily commute would be a major factor to consider. The financial aspect is unlikely to be a concern, but managing the logistics could become an additional challenge during his first season with the Philadelphia 76ers.
