Mario Hezonja’s future remains one of the biggest storylines of the European basketball offseason. According to Marca, the Croatian forward’s departure from Real Madrid may not be as straightforward as initially expected. Although Hezonja informed the club before the contractual deadline of his intention to activate his NBA exit clause, he has reportedly neither presented an official NBA offer nor paid the required $1 million buyout.
Marca reports that ACB regulations require the notification and payment of the buyout to be completed simultaneously. To resolve the situation, Hezonja’s representatives have reportedly offered to increase the amount paid to secure his release. As a result, Real Madrid is now believed to be in a strong negotiating position and could either demand higher compensation or even retain the player. Despite that, the club has already signed Mikael Jantunen as a replacement.
Meanwhile, NBA interest remains alive, although Marc Stein has reported that the offers received so far have been non-guaranteed deals. Should an NBA move fail, EuroLeague clubs such as Dubai Basketball and Olympiacos are expected to monitor the situation closely.
