Gary Trent Jr.’s reported four-year, $64 million contract with the Milwaukee Bucks immediately raised eyebrows around the league, considering the guard was coming off an underwhelming season in which he averaged 8.1 points in 21 minutes per game, shooting 38% from the field and 36% from three-point range. At times, head coach Doc Rivers even left him on the bench for entire games.
Shortly after the contract became official, the NBA reportedly opened an investigation to determine whether any undisclosed agreements existed between the player and the Bucks before free agency.
Trent had played on minimum-salary contracts over the previous two seasons, making the size of his new deal a source of scrutiny.
If the league uncovers evidence of impermissible arrangements, Milwaukee could face significant penalties, including the loss of draft picks and substantial fines.
A similar case occurred 25 years ago with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Joe Smith. The franchise ultimately forfeited three future first-round picks (initially were five , was fined $3.5 million, and saw both its owner and general manager suspended.
