The former Defensive Player of the Year reunites with Ime Udoka on a $13M contract with player option

Marcus Smart is joining the Houston Rockets. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the free agent guard has agreed to a two-year, $13 million deal, including a player option for the second season.

Smart will reunite with Ime Udoka, his former head coach with the Boston Celtics, and is expected to have a significant opportunity in Houston’s backcourt. The former Defensive Player of the Year brings leadership, toughness and elite defensive experience.

According to Bobby Marks, the contract does not hard cap Houston at the first apron, giving the Rockets flexibility to bring back restricted forward Tari Eason. Houston remains $28.5 million below the second apron hard cap.
