Luis Scola, CEO of Pallacanestro Varese and global basketball legend, recently discussed the future of European basketball on the En Modo Avión podcast, arguing that the NBA Europe model will significantly transform—and potentially replace—the EuroLeague structure as we know it today. According to the former Argentine star, the NBA is not just a sports league, but an entire economic system built on franchise collaboration, investment, and shared growth.
Scola explains that this approach, already well established in the United States, is now beginning to take shape in Europe through the NBA–FIBA project, which aims to create a new continental league. This new competition would be more open, structured around a franchise system, and supported by major investments in infrastructure, marketing, and player development—emphasizing collective effort for collective growth.
Having experienced both the European and American sporting models during his playing career, Scola sees the arrival of NBA Europe as a turning point set to redefine the structure, economics, and identity of European basketball.
