The Los Angeles Lakers reportedly promised Luka Doncic a roster built to maximize his skill set. The reference point would be the 2024 Dallas Mavericks, who reached the NBA Finals with a balanced team around him.
During extension talks last summer, Doncic wanted clarity on the franchise’s plans. The Lakers reportedly told him they intended to build a balanced roster featuring a lob-catching, rim-protecting big man and multiple 3&D players.
One key piece already appears to be in place with Austin Reaves, viewed as the long-term secondary playmaker next to Doncic. The Lakers expect Reaves to decline his 2026/27 player option and sign a long-term deal, while Doncic has reportedly made clear he wants to keep playing with him.
Finding the right pick-and-roll big man and perimeter defensive pieces will require more work. Los Angeles could have more than $50 million in cap space this offseason to shape the roster around Doncic and, likely, a re-signed Reaves.
