Erik Spoelstra said LaMelo Ball should have been ejected for the play that led to Bam Adebayo leaving the Miami Heat’s 127-126 overtime play-in loss to the Charlotte Hornets. Adebayo suffered a lower back injury on the sequence and did not return after exiting in the second quarter.
Spoelstra called the action “stupid” and “dangerous,” while also insisting it was not an excuse for Miami’s defeat. Ball later apologized after the game and said he planned to check on Adebayo.
The officiating explanation came afterward, with crew chief Zach Zarba saying the play was no longer reviewable because no foul had been called in real time and the review window had closed before the next stoppage. Charlotte now moves on in the play-in, while Miami misses the playoffs for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
