The Los Angeles Lakers announced that Luka Doncic will be sidelined at least through the end of the regular season because of a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. The injury was confirmed by an MRI in Dallas after he went down in the third quarter of the heavy loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The team did not provide a full timetable beyond the final five regular-season games, although this type of injury usually requires a longer recovery. The setback will prevent Doncic from reaching the 65-game threshold for end-of-season awards, but his agent Bill Duffy said he plans to file an “Extraordinary Circumstances Challenge”.
Even so, Doncic’s first full season with the Lakers has been remarkable, with averages of 33.5 points, 8.3 assists, 7.7 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 64 appearances. Los Angeles is currently third in the Western Conference and has already clinched a playoff spot, but the focus now shifts to whether its star can return in time for the opening round.
