Ettore Messina, president of basketball operations at Olimpia Milano, was a special guest at Italy’s General Consulate in New York for an event organized by IBBL, where he also discussed the future of European basketball and the NBA Europe project.
On NBA Europe, Messina called it “a huge opportunity to clean up the ecosystem in Europe,” adding: “Players play too many games… there is a conversation between EuroLeague and the NBA… I hope they find a common path.” He stressed the need for financial sustainability and a framework shared by the two organizations.
Messina also said the NBA is in talks with “a group of teams,” including Olimpia Milano: “There are seven or eight European teams, and others to be created ‘artificially’ in cities like Rome, Manchester, Paris. They are working very hard.”
He also addressed his decision to step down as Milano’s head coach: “I realized I couldn’t do that job anymore… we had already prepared a succession plan with my lead assistant for the following year, and we decided to do it right away.”
