Jeanie Buss told CNBC she believes her late father Jerry Buss would have supported the 2025 decision to sell the Buss family’s majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers to billionaire Mark Walter, stressing that “to stay at the top of the NBA, you need resources” and a unified direction. Buss added the move was made with the Lakers’ long-term greatness—and her father’s legacy—in mind.
The agreement, reached in June 2025 and finalized in late October, left the family with roughly 17% ownership—enough to satisfy NBA rules for Buss to remain governor. After the sale closed, five of the six Buss siblings were removed from their team roles, while Jeanie received a five-year contract and reiterated: “I’m not going anywhere.”
On the basketball side, Buss addressed the franchise’s shift from LeBron James to a future built around Luka Dončić, calling the Walter partnership a stabilizing force to keep building. Regarding LeBron—entering the final year of his deal—she kept the door open: “Never say never,” while noting there has been no clear indication yet.
