Steve Kerr: “There’s No Way the 73–9 Warriors Record Will Ever Be Broken”

Steve Kerr doesn’t believe NBA history will ever see another team surpass the Golden State Warriors’ iconic 73–9 regular-season record from the 2015–16 campaign, as reported by NY Times.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s game against the Charlotte Hornets, Kerr was definitive:

“I don’t think there’s any way anybody’s going to break it. I remember at the time I thought, ‘No way.’ And then, about a month ago, I thought it would be broken. And now, I don’t think there’s any way anybody’s gonna break it again.”

Kerr referenced how close the Oklahoma City Thunder appeared to be earlier this season, but explained why the feat remains so elusive.

“It’s such a difficult thing. You have to have good health, you have to have some luck. And most teams probably aren’t going to push themselves that hard to get there. My guess is it won’t be broken.”

A record they rarely talk about

Despite the magnitude of the achievement, Kerr revealed that the 73–9 season is not a frequent topic inside the organization.

“Never,” Kerr said when asked if the team discusses it. “We have a banner hanging in the facility commemorating the record, and other than that, we never talk about it. It’s an incredible accomplishment — just stunning to think about winning that many games.”

One statistic from that run still stands out to him above all others:

“My favorite stat from that whole stretch was that we went something like 135 games without losing two in a row.”

Draymond Green and the team’s mindset

Kerr also shared a story from late in the season that perfectly captured the mentality of that Warriors group.

“There’s no regrets. That’s for sure,” Kerr said. “I remember we were in Memphis late in the year. I played 11 or 12 guys in the first half and it was a close game at halftime. Draymond Green came to me and said, ‘Coach, we all want this. Don’t mess around. Let’s go get this.’ That was the mentality of the team.”

Ten years on, the 73–9 Warriors remain a benchmark of excellence — and, in Kerr’s eyes, an untouchable one in NBA history.
