Giannis Antetokounmpo believes improved leadership starts with himself as the Milwaukee Bucks look to regain consistency and rediscover their sense of purpose.
“As a leader, I just gotta be better,” Antetokounmpo said. “I have to be better defensively. I have to be better. Gotta move the ball more. I gotta playmake more.”
Giannis stressed that the Bucks’ offense needs to flow through him in a more balanced way, allowing him not only to score but also to create opportunities for teammates.
“I feel like I get the ball only in positions that I gotta score,” he explained. “I gotta playmake better and also try to score. Go back to what I do, put on the cape.”
Milwaukee’s issues were evident after a sharp contrast between two recent performances. In Monday’s win over the Charlotte Hornets, the Bucks committed just nine turnovers and assisted on 29 of their 44 made field goals. Two days later, however, they regressed, committing 15 turnovers and recording only 24 assists as the offense stalled into isolation-heavy basketball.
“I think we didn’t play at a high level,” said Antetokounmpo, who finished the game with 33 points, 15 rebounds, and three assists. “We didn’t trust one another. We kept them in the game too much.”
Giannis emphasized the importance of building sustainable habits, especially with a challenging stretch ahead.
“We cannot win one or two games on the road against really good teams — like Chicago Bulls and Charlotte — then come back home and give a game away,” he said. “We just put ourselves back in the position we were in. We have a very tough schedule coming up, and every win, every game counts right now.”
