The NBA is reexamining its injury reporting policies following the recent federal illegal gambling probe that led to the arrests of three current and former league figures.
In a memo obtained by The Athletic, NBA general counsel Rich Buchanan and EVP Dan Spillane wrote that “given the spread of legal betting and recurring integrity issues across sports,” this is the time to reassess how the league can best “protect itself, its players, and its fans.”
The league is especially concerned about prop bets — wagers on individual player performance — which played a role in the indictments of Terry Rozier and Jontay Porter. The memo indicates that the NBA may tighten how and when injury information must be made public, as current rules allow updates as late as 30 minutes before tipoff.
The issue came to light again with Luka Dončić’s late scratch in Sacramento, despite clear signs he would miss the game. The NBA is also exploring AI-based monitoring tools to detect suspicious betting activity in real time.
