Detroit Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff voiced concern over the growing impact of sports betting on the NBA, warning that even casual conversations can have serious consequences. “It’s a scary situation,” he said before Sunday’s home opener against the Celtics. “The information our guys have — from practices or shootarounds — can be monetized now. You have to be extremely careful.”
Bickerstaff added, “When you get in bed with gambling, a lot comes with it. All money ain’t good money.” His comments follow the arrest of Chauncey Billups — a close friend — in connection with a federal gambling investigation that also involves Terry Rozier. “I’ve known him since I was in seventh grade,” Bickerstaff said. “It’s hard to see what he’s going through, but we have to let due process take its course.”
The Pistons coach emphasized the need for education and awareness: “This is a sensitive issue. Players and coaches must understand that information now equals money — and risk.”
