Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe exploded for 34 points in a 117-116 win over the Boston Celtics, the highest-scoring NBA debut since Wilt Chamberlain.
The Bahamian forward, formerly of Baylor, broke Allen Iverson’s team record of 30 points and joined elite company — only Chamberlain (43) and Frank Selvy (35) scored more in their first game. “I worked my whole life for moments like this,” Edgecombe said.
Coach Nick Nurse praised his composure beside Tyrese Maxey, who added 40 points. Together, they combined for 74 points, the second-highest total ever by a duo on opening night.
