Luka Doncic with 42pts leads Slovenia in 84-77 win vs Italy to reach the EuroBasket quarter-finals

Italy’s EuroBasket 2025 run ends in the Round of 16 against Slovenia

Italy’s journey at EuroBasket 2025 came to an end in the Round of 16, as they were defeated by Slovenia in the third matchup of the day at Arena Riga.

Led by a devastating start from Luka Dončić—who had already scored 30 points by halftime—Slovenia surged ahead to a 19-point lead, forcing the Azzurri to play catch-up for nearly the entire game.

In the final quarter, Gianmarco Pozzecco’s squad fought their way back into the game, spurred on by the energy of Niang and the determined play of Danilo Gallinari—making his final appearance with the national team. The Italians managed to close the gap, coming within one point after a crucial basket from Simone Fontecchio (who finished with 22 points).

However, despite showing heart and pride, Italy ran out of gas in the final minutes. Dončić sealed the win from the free-throw line, securing Slovenia’s place in the quarterfinals, where they will face tournament favorites Germany.

The Lakers star finished with 42 points on 11-of-19 shooting. Italy, on the other hand, paid the price for too many turnovers and allowing offensive rebounds—along with a disastrous start that ultimately proved too much to overcome.

Italy: Gallinari 10, Melli 8+6 with 4 steals, Fontecchio 22+5, Thompson, Ricci, Spagnolo 2, Niang 12+6, Spissu 6 & 8 assists, Diouf 8, Pajola 9 & 6 assists
Slovenia: Krampelj 4, Nikolic 7, Prepelic 11, Muric 6+5, Radovic 2, Hrovat 5, Omic 7+7, Stergar, Doncic 42+10
