“Everyone’s worst fear appears to have come true here,” said Sutterer, describing how Haliburton pushed off his right foot in a dorsiflexed position, stressing the Achilles. The sudden concentric contraction of the calf, combined with eccentric tension on the tendon, points to a classic rupture mechanism.
Sutterer noted the visible “recoil” of the calf muscle—a telltale sign of a tendon tear. He compared it to Kevin Durant’s Achilles rupture, which was initially misidentified as a calf strain. “I wonder if this was more of an Achilles issue all along,” Sutterer said, adding that typical muscle strains don’t cause that kind of dramatic motion.
He also warned against the risks of playing through such injuries: “Teams often try to paint a positive picture, but we don’t always know where exactly the injury lies.”
Haliburton exited early after scoring nine points in just over seven minutes. If the injury is confirmed as an Achilles rupture, he could be out for the entire 2025–26 season.
“I’m absolutely gutted for him,” Sutterer added. “I wanted to see the Pacers win.”
