{"id":514504,"date":"2026-09-09T16:28:17","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T14:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportando.basketball\/?p=514504"},"modified":"2026-09-09T16:28:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T14:28:17","slug":"equatorial-guinea-fake-passport-case-panko-nguema-and-aranda-convicted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportando.basketball\/en\/equatorial-guinea-fake-passport-case-panko-nguema-and-aranda-convicted\/","title":{"rendered":"Equatorial Guinea Fake passport case: Panko, Nguema and Aranda convicted"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 data-section-id=\"1iomja1\" data-start=\"3433\" data-end=\"3454\">Three convictions<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3456\" data-end=\"3667\">The trial over the fake Equatorial Guinea passports used during the 2014-15 ACB season by <strong data-start=\"3546\" data-end=\"3566\">Marcus Slaughter<\/strong>, then with Real Madrid, and <strong data-start=\"3595\" data-end=\"3609\">Andy Panko<\/strong>, then with Fuenlabrada, has ended with three convictions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3669\" data-end=\"3986\"><strong data-start=\"3669\" data-end=\"3678\">Panko<\/strong>, former Equatorial Guinean player <strong data-start=\"3713\" data-end=\"3731\">Richard Nguema<\/strong>, who had the contacts to arrange and obtain the documents, and <strong data-start=\"3795\" data-end=\"3812\">Juli\u00e1n Aranda<\/strong>, the Spanish representative of Beo Basket, the agency representing both players, were found responsible for <strong data-start=\"3921\" data-end=\"3985\">forgery of an official document and forgery of a certificate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3988\" data-end=\"4182\">The verdict can still be appealed. <strong data-start=\"4023\" data-end=\"4050\">Slaughter was not tried<\/strong>, as authorities were unable to serve him with the summons and he did not appear at the trial.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"iw2c25\" data-start=\"4184\" data-end=\"4208\">Hugo L\u00f3pez acquitted<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4210\" data-end=\"4274\">Former Real Madrid assistant coach <strong data-start=\"4245\" data-end=\"4259\">Hugo L\u00f3pez<\/strong> was acquitted.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4276\" data-end=\"4480\">The court ruled that there was insufficient evidence against him beyond a number of indications, including providing Nguema&#8217;s phone number, speaking with Aranda by telephone and a subsequent conversation.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"ruardt\" data-start=\"4482\" data-end=\"4515\">The identical passport number<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4517\" data-end=\"4678\">The case emerged after Panko submitted an Equatorial Guinea passport to the ACB, which would have granted him European-player status under the Cotonou Agreement.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4680\" data-end=\"4872\">However, the passport had <strong data-start=\"4706\" data-end=\"4749\">the same number as Slaughter&#8217;s document<\/strong>. The Spanish Basketball Federation alerted authorities, eventually leading to the discovery that both passports were fake.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4874\" data-end=\"5103\">The documents could provide an advantage in the management of non-EU players. Slaughter was the only one of the two players who actually benefited from the status, although he was registered as an American again for the playoffs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5105\" data-end=\"5333\">Real Madrid already had two non-EU players in <strong data-start=\"5151\" data-end=\"5188\">Gustavo Ay\u00f3n and Facundo Campazzo<\/strong>, with only two allowed to be active at the same time. When Slaughter was registered again as an American, Campazzo was left out of the playoffs.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"18xjdxp\" data-start=\"5335\" data-end=\"5352\">The sentences<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5354\" data-end=\"5486\">For <strong data-start=\"5358\" data-end=\"5393\">forgery of an official document<\/strong>, Nguema received <strong data-start=\"5411\" data-end=\"5459\">10 months in prison and five months of fines<\/strong>, with a daily rate of \u20ac10.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5488\" data-end=\"5579\">Panko and Aranda were each sentenced to <strong data-start=\"5528\" data-end=\"5578\">five months in prison and four months of fines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5581\" data-end=\"5763\">For <strong data-start=\"5585\" data-end=\"5613\">forgery of a certificate<\/strong>, Nguema received a five-month fine, while Panko and Aranda were each given <strong data-start=\"5689\" data-end=\"5724\">two months and 15 days of fines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"xcaf9v\" data-start=\"5765\" data-end=\"5794\">Barcelona joined the case<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5796\" data-end=\"5902\"><strong data-start=\"5796\" data-end=\"5809\">Barcelona<\/strong>, who lost the 2015 Liga final to Real Madrid, appeared in the trial as a private prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5904\" data-end=\"6091\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The Catalan club had initially requested <strong data-start=\"5945\" data-end=\"5979\">two and a half years in prison<\/strong> for the player and his agents.
