Ettore Messina is among the special guests at the Split Youth Games, Europe’s largest amateur sporting event dedicated to children and young athletes. The former Olimpia Milano head coach spoke to Adnkronos about several topics.

Expectations for the new season

“I expect very competitive games. There are teams that have strengthened, and there are two new clubs in Rome. I think it could be an even more competitive league than it has been in the recent past, when things had already become interesting, but now there are more teams fighting for a place at the top. I think it will be a beautiful season.”

The NBA Europe project

“The problem is that at the moment we don’t really know what this model actually consists of. There are many people who want to take part, there is a dream among all the teams aspiring to participate of making a lot of money, but at the moment you have to spend a lot to get closer. And like everything that is selective and at the very highest level, in the end there will be someone who is happy to participate, while others will be left disappointed after trying and not succeeding.”

The national team and Luca Banchi

“I think Luca is the most suitable person at this moment, also because he came from his experience with the Latvian national team, where he had already played a very important role in rebuilding not only the senior team, but also the youth teams in that country. The national team has done very well so far despite the absence of important players who were playing in the NBA or EuroLeague. These games could give us early qualification, but in any case, we are in a good position.”

His future

“For now, I’m going to enjoy some nice days here (laughs, ed.), then we’ll see.”
