The timing of the Los Angeles Lakers<\/strong> sale could have massive tax implications for Mark Walter<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to an analysis by Sportico<\/strong>, Walter could save approximately $425 million<\/strong> in taxes depending on when the NBA Board of Governors<\/strong> officially approves the sale of the franchise to Joshua Kushner<\/strong> and Bob Iger<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Walter agreed to sell the Lakers at a record $12.5 billion valuation<\/strong>, generating an estimated $2.5 billion profit<\/strong> on the transaction.<\/p>\n

The key issue is whether the sale closes before or after the one-year anniversary<\/strong> of Walter becoming the Lakers’ controlling owner in late October 2025. If the transaction is completed after that milestone, it would qualify for the long-term capital gains tax rate<\/strong>, which is significantly lower than the short-term rate.<\/p>\n

Based on calculations by CPA Robert Raiola<\/strong>, Walter’s tax bill would be roughly $930 million<\/strong> under the long-term capital gains rate, compared to approximately $1.36 billion<\/strong> if the sale is treated as a short-term gain\u2014a difference of about $425 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Raiola noted that the final tax liability could vary depending on deductions, transaction expenses, and Walter’s tax residency, among other factors.<\/p>\n

The situation is also complicated by an ongoing federal investigation<\/strong> into Walter’s business holdings, which could affect the structure of the transaction and lead the parties to negotiate additional legal protections.<\/p>\n
