The Portland Trail Blazers and city officials finally met to discuss the future of Moda Center, but the two sides remain far apart. According to Jason Quick of The Athletic, the key issue is a proposed agreement that would provide $573 million in public funding for arena renovations in exchange for a 20-year lease keeping the franchise in Portland.

The state of Oregon has already committed $365 million, but the plan depends on the city of Portland approving $120 million and Multnomah County contributing another $88 million. The city council is scheduled to vote on the term sheet on August 12, while the Blazers’ current lease expires on October 11, 2030.

A major point of tension is the 2024 bridge agreement, which requires the Blazers to maintain Moda Center in a “first-class manner.” The franchise fears that sharing details about needed upgrades could expose it to litigation, a possibility Mayor Keith Wilson denied. City council president Jamie Dunphy still stressed the need for transparency: “We have a responsibility to be transparent and accountable to the public with every dollar we are spending.”
