VCU has announced a contract extension for Phil Martelli Jr. through the 2031-32 season, adding two more years to the deal he signed when he arrived last March. The move follows an outstanding first season in which the Rams finished 28-8, won the Atlantic 10 and earned an NCAA Tournament victory.<\/p>\n
Athletic director Ed McLaughlin said: \u201cCoach Martelli showed all season that he embodies the leadership qualities we want in our head men\u2019s basketball coach. He made history in his first season by winning the Atlantic 10 Championship and an NCAA Tournament game.\u201d Martelli added: \u201cI am grateful to the players and the staff who believed in the vision and worked tirelessly to ensure its continued success. We look forward to adding to the rich legacy of this program.\u201d<\/p>\n
It is another major step for Martelli, who had already built momentum at Bryant before arriving at VCU. In three seasons as a head coach, he owns a 71-33 overall record, with at least 20 wins every year.
