The NBA announced Thursday night it has fined the Utah Jazz $500,000<\/strong> and the Indiana Pacers $100,000<\/strong>, saying both teams recently sat healthy players in ways that violated the league\u2019s player participation policy. Commissioner Adam Silver<\/strong> issued a strong message, warning that \u201covert behavior\u201d that puts draft position ahead of winning \u201cundermines the foundation of NBA competition,\u201d adding the league will respond to any further conduct that \u201ccompromises the integrity of our games.\u201d<\/p>\n

Utah\u2019s fine stems from games vs. Orlando (Feb. 7)<\/strong> and Miami (Feb. 9)<\/strong>, where the NBA said Lauri Markkanen<\/strong> and Jaren Jackson Jr.<\/strong> were benched for the entire fourth quarter despite being able to continue, with outcomes still in doubt. Asked after the Miami game if he considered bringing them back, coach Will Hardy<\/strong> replied: \u201cI wasn\u2019t.\u201d He later said he followed the medical staff, citing a minutes restriction for Markkanen. Jackson\u2019s minutes were limited due to a knee issue, and the Jazz announced he will undergo season-ending surgery after the All-Star break. Owner Ryan Smith<\/strong> criticized the decision on social media, questioning why the team was fined after winning in Miami.<\/p>\n

Indiana\u2019s violation was tied to its Feb. 3<\/strong> game against Utah. The league found Pascal Siakam<\/strong> and two other starters who sat \u201ccould have played\u201d under the policy\u2019s medical standard, including on reduced minutes, or could have been held out of different games in a way that better aligned with compliance.
