A revolution in American college sports has arrived.<\/strong> With the final approval of the <em data-start=\"290\" data-end=\"305\">House v. NCAA<\/em> settlement by federal judge Claudia Wilken, the landscape of collegiate athletics has been irrevocably altered. <strong data-start=\"418\" data-end=\"498\">For the first time in history, universities can directly pay their athletes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"500\" data-end=\"764\">What was once taboo is now the law of the land. Starting July 1, 2025, athletic departments across the country can distribute up to <strong data-start=\"632\" data-end=\"658\">$20.5 million per year<\/strong> to their athletes as part of a new revenue-sharing model based on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"766\" data-end=\"1132\">The agreement settles a trio of antitrust lawsuits filed against the NCAA and the Power Five conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, and Pac-12), and includes a staggering <strong data-start=\"938\" data-end=\"970\">$2.8 billion in back damages<\/strong> for athletes who were denied NIL earnings from 2016 to the present. Most of that money will go to former football and men\u2019s basketball players from top programs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1369\">This moment marks <strong data-start=\"1152\" data-end=\"1207\">a seismic shift in the foundation of college sports<\/strong>, a domain long governed by an amateurism model that prohibited direct compensation, even as billions flowed into universities, coaches, and television contracts.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1371\" data-end=\"1644\">NCAA president <strong data-start=\"1386\" data-end=\"1403\">Charlie Baker<\/strong> hailed the settlement as \u201c<strong data-start=\"1430\" data-end=\"1498\">a new beginning for Division I athletes and for the NCAA itself.<\/strong>\u201d But the understated rhetoric hides <strong data-start=\"1535\" data-end=\"1562\">a transformative moment<\/strong>, one that finally grants athletes economic rights after generations of imbalance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1937\">Since the Supreme Court\u2019s unanimous <em data-start=\"1682\" data-end=\"1690\">Alston<\/em> ruling in 2021 \u2014 which declared NCAA compensation limits unlawful \u2014 pressure had mounted. Now, with NIL deals exploding into multimillion-dollar territory and the NCAA\u2019s legal shield cracking, <strong data-start=\"1884\" data-end=\"1937\">change was no longer optional. It was inevitable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1939\" data-end=\"2170\">The newly formed <strong data-start=\"1956\" data-end=\"1985\">College Sports Commission<\/strong>, a regulatory body taking over key NCAA functions, will monitor the new system, enforce NIL caps, and vet all third-party NIL deals above $600 to ensure legitimacy and market fairness.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2172\" data-end=\"2445\">Yet, this is not the end of the legal battles. The <em data-start=\"2223\" data-end=\"2240\">Johnson v. NCAA<\/em> case seeks to classify college athletes as employees with rights to wages and benefits. Future challenges over gender equity (Title IX), state law conflicts, and antitrust scrutiny are all on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2447\" data-end=\"2591\">Still, <strong data-start=\"2454\" data-end=\"2470\">June 7, 2025<\/strong>, will be remembered as a watershed date \u2014 <strong data-start=\"2513\" data-end=\"2591\">the day the amateur model crumbled, and college athletes finally got paid.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2593\" data-end=\"2661\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">No longer just student-athletes. <strong data-start=\"2626\" data-end=\"2661\" data-is-last-node=\"\">Now, they\u2019re professionals too.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s official.
