{"id":328012,"date":"2023-04-26T08:56:52","date_gmt":"2023-04-26T06:56:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportando.basketball\/?p=328012"},"modified":"2023-04-26T08:57:22","modified_gmt":"2023-04-26T06:57:22","slug":"paolo-banchero-named-2022-23-kia-nba-rookie-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportando.basketball\/en\/paolo-banchero-named-2022-23-kia-nba-rookie-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Paolo Banchero named 2022-23 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Paolo Banchero became the frontrunner to win Rookie of the Year race from the very moment that he went No. 1 in last year\u2019s draft.<\/p>\n<p>And nobody caught him.<\/p>\n<p>Banchero was announced Tuesday night as the overwhelming winner of the top rookie award for this season, after the Orlando forward led all first-year players in scoring and helped the Magic improve from a 22-win last season to a 34-win club that contended for a play-in berth this season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/awards\/2023\">2022-23 NBA awards<\/a><br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/history-rookie-of-the-year-winners\">NBA Rookie of the Year award winners<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The former Duke standout averaged 20 points per game. He had 15 games of at least 25 points and 40 games of at least 20 points, both the most among rookies this season. And he won rookie of the month four times, each of those announcements only further indicating that he was ahead of the field.<\/p>\n<p>He became the third player to win rookie of the year as a member of the Magic, joining Shaquille O\u2019Neal in 1993 and Mike Miller \u2014 who represents Banchero \u2014 in 2001. It was just a goal I\u2019ve always had, something I had my eye on from the second I got drafted. I\u2019m glad I was able to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Banchero got 98 of the 100 first-place votes from a panel of writers and broadcasters who cover the league. Jalen Williams of the Oklahoma City Thunder was second and Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz was third. Kessler got the two first-place votes that Banchero didn\u2019t receive.<\/p>\n<p>Banchero is the first No. 1 pick to win the award in the season immediately after getting drafted since Karl-Anthony Towns in 2016; Ben Simmons won the award in 2018, two years after he went No. 1.<\/p>\n<p>Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said one of his biggest takeaways from Banchero\u2019s first season was an on-court maturity and willingness to play the right way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had an ability to adjust in-game to whatever was asked of him to impact winning,\u201d Mosley said.<\/p>\n<p>Banchero freely acknowledges that he\u2019s not a finished product, and Mosley said the team wants him to lock in on certain areas over the offseason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s so many ways in which he can grow,\u201d Mosley said. \u201cI think a lot of times rookies will come in and they\u2019ll try to do everything. The biggest talk with him is just to have a focus on one or two pieces for the summer, where he can improve in certain areas \u2014 because he\u2019s going to work. I don\u2019t think that\u2019s going to be any question whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"embed-wrapper\"><iframe class=\"mkv-embed mkv-embed-1098868 mkv-embed-prod\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/watch\/embed\/1098868?autostart=false&amp;mute=true\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-nba-id=\"1098868\" data-nba-env=\"prod\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paolo Banchero is just the 6th rookie in the last 50 seasons to average at least 20 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the final chapter of his season-long rookie diary for\u00a0<em>The Associated Press<\/em>, Banchero also detailed some of the ways he wants to improve over the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to be more consistent, more dangerous from 3-point range next season,\u201d he said. \u201cThere were stretches during this year where I shot the ball well. I just need to find the consistency. I think expanding my range in Year 2, then just getting in best shape I possibly can \u2014 I think I was in good shape this year, but just want to take it to another level. To get to where I want to be, everything\u2019s just going to have to be kicked up a notch. And I\u2019m looking forward to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Banchero becomes the sixth person to receive one of the NBA\u2019s top individual awards so far in this award season, following the reveals of Memphis\u2019 Jaren Jackson Jr. as defensive player of the year, Sacramento\u2019s De\u2019Aaron Fox as the inaugural winner of the clutch player award, Kings coach Mike Brown as a unanimous pick for coach of the year, Boston\u2019s Malcolm Brogdon as sixth man of the year and Utah\u2019s Lauri Markkanen as the league\u2019s most improved player.<\/p>\n<p>That only leaves the biggest individual prize of all \u2014 MVP.<\/p>\n<p>Two-time reigning MVP Nikola Jokic of Denver is a finalist again, along with Milwaukee\u2019s Giannis Antetokounmpo and Philadelphia\u2019s Joel Embiid.
