Willy Hernangómez set to sign for Barça until 2026
29-year-old centre from Madrid set to sign for the next 3 seasons
illy Hernangómez is set to be a Barça player until 30 June 2026. The Club presented a qualifying offer to the ACB, as the player was subject to first refusal by the club with his rights in the Liga Endesa, Real Madrid. Midnight was the deadline for them to equal the offer, and now, to all intents and purposes, Willy is a blaugrana player.
Breakout with Sevilla
Aged 29 years old and measuring 2.11 metres tall, Guillermo Gustavo "Willy" Hernangómez is a player that came through the Real Madrid youth system, before leaving the club to start his career in the NBA for the 2016/17 season. He was drafted in 2015 by the Philadelphia 76ers, and also played for the New York Knicks, Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans franchises in the USA.
Prior to moving across the Atlantic, he first spent a season in the ACB with Real Madrid, after being loaned to the former Club Baloncesto Sevilla, where he played with current blaugrana, Tomas Satoransky. Hernangómez made his name in a young team in Andalusia, which featured Barça’s point guard, the NBA player Kristaps Porzingis, and Aíto García Reneses as coach.
His numbers
The two seasons in Seville plus the final season he played at Real Madrid helped confirm his potential to play against some of the best centres in the world. After playing 111 games in the ACB, Willy decided to cross the Atlantic.
He spent seven seasons in the NBA, playing a total of 344 games, with the averages of 14.5 minutes, 7.2 points, and 5.5 rebounds. His best season and numbers came in the first at New York (72 games played, 18.4 minutes, 8.2 points and 7 rebounds) and the second at New Orleans (50 games played, 16.8 minutes, 9.1 points and 6.8 rebounds).
MVP from the last Eurobasket tournament
His role with the Spanish national side grew over the years. When first Pau Gasol and then his brother Marc stepped down, he got the opportunity to be the starting centre at the last Eurobasket tournament, which he really made the most of. Spain were crowned champions and he was named MVP of the tournament, playing 9 games (22.4 minutes, 17.2 points, and 6.9 rebounds).
His overall numbers with Spain are 84 games played (14.29 minutes, 9.5 points, 4.5 rebounds).
