Simone Fontecchio, in a post-match interview picked up by pianetabasket.com, commented on his remarkable 30-point performance against Serbia. “What can I say? I am truly happy about the victory. We did great work, especially in the third quarter where we didn’t give up despite being 16 points behind. That was key. Whether we are 16 points behind or ahead, we keep fighting to the end. This is the result,” said Fontecchio.

He went on to commend teammate Luigi ‘Gigi’ Datome, stating, “Gigi is a legend. What he did today is just the cherry on top of his career. He led us from being 16 points down, at the age of 36 or 37, I don’t know. It was simply amazing.”

Fontecchio added, “I’m glad I could help the team by scoring, but I think I can contribute in various ways—even if I score zero points, by playing defense, grabbing rebounds or passing the ball. Was this the best day I’ve ever had with the national team? I don’t know. We’ll see how important this game turns out to be in a few days. But it has certainly been one of the most beautiful evenings I’ve experienced with the national team. I hope it will mean a lot in a couple of days.”
