Jeff Schwartz: Kings have informed Bagley he is not in the opening night rotation, it’s baffling

Sacramento Kings’ Marvin Bagley III agent Jeff Schwartz said in a statement : «Sacramento has informed Marvin Bagley he is not in the opening night rotation, which is completely baffling. It’s clear they have no plans for him in the future, and yet, passed on potential deals at last year’s deadline and this summer based on ‘value.’ Instead, they chose to bring him back but not play him, a move completely contradictory to their ‘value’ argument».

Rockets Claim Garrison Mathews off Waivers

The Houston Rockets today announced they have claimed guard Garrison Mathews off waivers from Boston and converted his contract to a two-way deal.

The guard spent two seasons with the Washington Wizards, the last with 5.5 points (38% 3p) per game.

In a related move, the Rockets have waived forward Anthony Lamb.

Warriors re-sign Gary Payton II

The Golden State Warriors have announced the return of Gary Payton II.

The former Oregon State guard was released over the weekend.

Also, according to Anthony Slater, the team claimed Jeff Dowtin (cut by the Magic) from waivers and converted his deal into a two-way contract.

Timberwolves exercise contract options on Edwards, McDaniels

The Minnesota Timberwolves exercised their 2022-23 rookie scale team options for Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels. This is the third-year option for both players.

Edwards was selected first overall at the 2020 NBA Draft. The Georgia product played in all 72 games (55 starts) as a rookie. He averaged 19.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.1 steals.

McDaniels was drafted with the 28th pick of the first round at the 2020 NBA Draft. His rights were acquired by Minnesota in a three-team deal that involved the Oklahoma City Thunder and New York Knicks. McDaniels played in 63 games (27 starts) and averaged 6.8 points and 3.7 rebounds.

Edwards will be under contract for the 2022-23 season at $10.7 million, while McDaniels will earn $2.2 million.

Grayson Allen agrees a two-year, $20 million rookie extension with Milwaukee Bucks.

Allen will earn a base salary of $4,054,695 this season.

Spurs exercise contract options on Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell

The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have exercised their fourth-year team option on forward Keldon Johnson, as well as their third-year option on guard Devin Vassell for the 2022-23 season.

Johnson is entering his third year with the Spurs after appearing in 69 games last season and averaging 12.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 28.5 minutes. He is one of three Spurs in franchise history (Tim Duncan and David Robinson) to record multiple games with 25-plus points and 10-or-more rebounds in their first 50 career games. Johnson was a member of this summer’s Team USA Basketball squad that captured the gold medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Originally selected by San Antonio in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft (29th overall), Johnson has seen action in 86 regular season games, averaging 12.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 26.4 minutes.

Vassell enters his second season with San Antonio following his rookie year when he averaged 5.5 points, 2.8 rebounds in 17.0 minutes over 62 games. He became just the seventh rookie in franchise history to record 50-plus three pointers in their first season. The former Florida State Seminole made his NBA debut at Memphis on Dec. 23, 2020, becoming the first rookie to play at least 20 minutes in a Spurs season-opener since James Anderson (27) on Oct. 27, 2010. Vassell became the first Spurs lottery pick since the 1997 season when the Silver and Black selected him with the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Suns talks with Ayton on extension ended without deal

DeAndre Ayton will be restricted free agent after this season.
The talks between the Phoenix Suns and the big man have ended without a deal.
Suns owner Robert Sarver refuted to offer Ayton a maximum contract and the 1st overall pick of the 2018 NBA Draft turned down the proposal.

Jaren Jackson to sign four-year, $105M contract extension

The Memphis Grizzlies have reached an agreement with Jaren Jackson for a four year, $105 million contract extension, ESPN reports.

Jackson, 22, has emerged as a cornerstone player on a gifted, young Grizzlies roster and has shown himself to be one of the most versatile and dynamic young big men in the league.

Jackson was the No. 4 pick out of Michigan State in the 2018 NBA draft and has partnered with point guard Ja Morant to construct one of the most promising young duos in the league.

Jackson missed a significant part of the 2020-21 season recovering from a meniscus injury but has returned to full strength this preseason. He has averaged 15.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in his three NBA seasons.

Garrison Mathews declined two-way contract with Celtics

The Boston Celtics offered Garrison Mathews a two-way deal but the player turned down the proposal becoming unrestricted free agent.

Per The Athletic, After playing the first two years of his career on Two-Way contracts with the Washington Wizards, Mathews believes he’s earned a standard NBA deal. Mathews became a key starter for the Wizards late last season and into the playoffs.

In 82 games (24 starts) over two season, Mathews has averaged 5.5 points per game. He’s a career 38.9% shooter on three-pointers.

Boston remains with one open Two-Way spot. Indications are that the Celtics will fill that spot before the regular season starts for them on Wednesday, October 20.

Jazz Convert Malik Fitts to Two-Way Contract

The Utah Jazz have converted the contract of forward Malik Fitts to a two-way contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released.

Fitts (6-8, 230, St. Mary’s) played in four preseason games with the Jazz, seeing action in four games, averaging 3.8 points on 45.5 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from three, along with 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 11.8 minutes per contest.

The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native played in three NBA games with the Los Angeles Clippers during the 2020-21 season and also appeared in 14 games (six starts) with the Agua Caliente Clippers of the NBA G League, averaging 11.1 points, 4.0 boards and 1.4 assists. Collegiately, Fitts spent two seasons at St. Mary’s (2018-20), where he averaged 15.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.3 steals in 68 career games (66 starts). He earned 2019-20 All-WCC First Team and 2018-19 All-WCC Second Team honors. Fitts began his collegiate career playing one season at South Florida.

Kings Exercise Option on Tyrese Haliburton

The Sacramento Kings announced today the team has exercised its 2022-23 option on guard Tyrese Haliburton, according to Kings General Manager Monte McNair.

Selected by the Kings with the 12th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft out of Iowa State, Haliburton garnered 2020-21 NBA All-Rookie First Team honors as he accrued averages of 13.0 points (.472 FG%, .409 3pt%, .857 FT%), 3.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.3 steals, and 30.1 minutes per game in 58 games (20 starts) during his rookie campaign.

Haliburton ranked third amongst all rookies in scoring (13.0 ppg), second in assists (5.3), sixth in field goal percentage (.472), third in three-point field goal percentage (.409), second in steals (1.3) and third in minutes (30.1) per game. The Oshkosh, Wisc. native was named back-to-back Western Conference Rookie of the Month for the months of December/January as well as for the month of February.

Atlanta Hawks Exercise Contract Options on Hunter, Reddish and Okongwu

The Atlanta Hawks have exercised the fourth-year (2022-23) contract options on De’Andre Hunter and Cam Reddish along with the third-year (2022-23) option on Onyeka Okongwu, it was announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

Entering his third season with the Hawks, Hunter averaged 15.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 29.5 minutes last season (.484 FG%, .326 3FG%, .859 FT%), appearing in 23 games (19 starts). He put in 10-19 points 11 times, 20-29 six times and 30-39 once, leading the club in scoring four times. He was selected to the 2021 NBA Rising Stars roster, comprised of 10 first- and second-year premier young players selected by the league’s assistant coaches. During the Hawks’ first round NBA Playoffs series win over New York, he compiled 10.8 points and 4.0 rebounds in 30.4 minutes, playing in and starting five games (.400 FG%, .375 3FG%, .750 FT%). In 86 career regular season games (81 starting assignments), the 6’7 forward is averaging 13.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 31.3 minutes (.430 FG%, .348 3FG%, .799 FT%). He was selected fourth overall in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Also going into his third season, Reddish played in 26 games (21 starts) for Atlanta in 2020-21. He averaged 11.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals in 28.8 minutes. The 6’8 forward put in 10-19 points 11 times and 20-29 points four times. After missing the final 42 games of the regular season and the first two rounds of the NBA Playoffs due to injury, he returned during the Eastern Conference Finals against Milwaukee, when he tallied 12.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.5 steals in 23.0 minutes (.528 FG%, .643 3FG%, .800 FT%) in four contests. In 84 career regular season games, including 55 starts, Reddish is averaging 10.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.1 steals in 27.4 minutes. He was selected 10th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft.

As a rookie in 2020-21, Okongwu averaged 4.6 points and 3.3 rebounds in 12.0 minutes, appearing in 50 games (four starts). The 6’9 big man scored 10-19 points six times and 20-29 once, pulling down 10-or-more rebounds twice and recording two double-doubles. In 18 games off the bench during Atlanta’s run to the Eastern Conference Finals, he averaged 2.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 9.2 minutes (.548 FG%, .667 FT%). He was selected sixth overall in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Lakers release Joel Ayayi, Chaundee Brown Jr., Cameron Oliver and Trevelin Queen

The Los Angeles Lakers have requested waivers on Joel Ayayi, Chaundee Brown Jr., Cameron Oliver and Trevelin Queen, it was announced today.

Ayayi, a versatile French guard out of Gonzaga, reached an agreement with the Lakers on a two-way contract  immediately after the last NBA Draft.

The Lakers roster stands at 15, including one two-way player.

Sacramento Kings Waive Emanuel Terry

The Sacramento Kings announced  that the team has waived forward Emanuel Terry.

Terry spent last year between KK Crvena Zvedza and the Agua Caliente Clippers in G League.

 

According to Jason Anderson of the Sacramento Bee, the power forward is expected to join the Sacramento’s G League affiliate, the Stockton Kings.

The Kings roster is now finalized, with 15 players on a standard contract and 2 two-way players (Louis King, Neemias Queta).
