Rudy Fernandez retires: Real Madrid’s farewell

With the announcement of Rudy Fernández’s retirement as a professional basketball player, Real Madrid C.F. would like to express its gratitude, affection and admiration for one of the great legends of our club and world basketball.

Since his arrival at Real Madrid in 2011, he has been a milestone and one of the great leaders of our team in one of the most successful eras in our history.

In the thirteen seasons he has worn our jersey, Rudy Fernández has become the third player to play the most games for Real Madrid, with a total of 754, and has won 26 titles: 3 European Cups, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 7 Championships, 6 King’s Cups and 9 Spanish Super Cups.

In addition, he was selected twice in the Ideal Euroleague Quintet (2012-2013 and 2013-2014), twice in the Ideal League Quintet (2012-2013 and 2013-2014) and was also MVP of the Spanish Supercup (2012), MVP of the Copa del Rey (2015) and MVP of the League Final (2017-2018).

Rudy Fernández played four seasons in the NBA, three with the Portland Trail Blazers (2008-2011) and one with the Denver Nuggets (2011-2012).

In Spain, he trained in the youth ranks of Club Joventut Badalona, a team with which he made his professional debut and with which he won 1 FIBA Eurocup (2006), 1 Copa del Rey (2008) and 1 ULEB Cup (2008), as well as being named FIBA Europe’s Best Young Player (2006), MVP of the FIBA Eurocup (2006), best young player in the Euroleague (2006-2007), member of the best five players in the Endesa League in two seasons (2006-2007 and 2007-2008), MVP of the ULEB Cup Final (2008) and MVP of the Copa del Rey twice (2004 and 2008).

Rudy Fernández is also one of the greatest legends of the Spanish national team, and after his participation as captain in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, he became the men’s basketball player who has participated in the most Olympic Games in history, with a total of 6: Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio de Janeiro 2016, Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.

In addition, Rudy Fernández is the player who has worn the shirt of the Spanish national team the most times (266), with which he has also achieved an extraordinary record: 6 gold medals (2006 and 2019 World Cups and 2009, 2011, 2015 and 2022 European Championships), 3 silver medals (2008 and 2012 Olympic Games and 2007 European Championships) and 2 bronze medals (2016 Olympic Games and 2013 European Championships). On an individual level, he was included in the ideal quintet of the 2009 European Championships in Poland.

A legend in Spanish and world sport, Rudy Fernández closes a historic period in which Real Madrid fans and the whole world have been able to appreciate his enormous qualities and his spectacular way of interpreting basketball. Real Madrid is and always will be his home and wishes him and his family all the best in this new phase of his life.
