Philadelphia 76ers’s Joel Embiid to undergo a procedure for a left meniscus injury

Joel Embiid, star centre of the Philadelphia 76ers and reigning MVP of the league, will undergo a procedure for a left meniscus injury in the coming days

Joel Embiid, star centre of the Philadelphia 76ers and reigning MVP of the league, will undergo a procedure for a left meniscus injury in the coming days, the team announced on Sunday night.

Despite an expected extended absence, the possibility of his return this season is not ruled out, sources told ESPN.

The exact timing of his absence will only be determined after the surgery. Embiid, who has already suffered injuries to both knees in his career, is leading the NBA with an average of 35.3 points per game and was approaching an all-time high, becoming the second player since Wilt Chamberlain to average at least 35 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in a season.

The meniscus injury occurred in the fourth period of the game against Golden State, when Warriors player Jonathan Kuminga fell on his knee.

The 76ers have struggled without Embiid, losing 10 of the 14 games played without him this season. Currently, the team has a 30-18 record, ranking fifth in the Eastern.
