Finland won the game despite the absence of Petteri Kopponen after his club, Barcelona, refused to release him. Perversely, Barcelona did release the Bulgarian player Aleksandar Vesenkov to Take part in the game.
Dettmann placed the blame on the shoulder of Euroleague which published a schedule which created a calendar conflict between its own games and the FIBA qualifying windows, creating conflict between players who want to represent their national teams and the clubs which employ them.
“Because of the action of Euroleague our starting point guard and starting shooting guard guards were unavailable,” he said. He went on to point out that robbed the team of collective experience of 229 national team games
He went on to underscore his argument: “In the last window CSKA Moscow let Russians players play for the national team but did not let Nando de Colo play for France."
Coach Dettmann is concerned that Eurloleague’s stance is hurting European basketball in general.
“People say FIBA should change the system, but I don’t think that’s the right decision,” he said.
“Euroleague is our leading (club) product and they should understand they are shooting themselves in the feet by managing the clubs as they have done in the last half year.”
