Chus Mateo: It’s a game situation, the referees did a good job

Chus Mateo, coach of Real Madrid, analyzed the defeat against Bayern Munich in the opening game of the EuroLeague: “We fought to get back into the game after a poor start. Our defense improved at the end of the second quarter and especially in the third. We came back and even managed to gain a ten-point lead”.

“At the beginning of the last quarter, the game stopped, maybe for too long, due to problems with one of the shot clocks. We started very cold, conceded many consecutive points, and scored only four. That was the key to the game. We need to improve our defense; we allowed too many three-pointers.”

Asked about a potential foul not called on Facundo Campazzo’s last three-point shot, which could have sent the game into overtime, Mateo chose not to fuel controversy: “I haven’t watched the video after the game. Right now, I don’t know. It’s a game situation, the referees did a good job, and they probably didn’t see the foul. That’s why they didn’t call it. We need to focus on our team, greatly improve our defense, and handle games better when we are ten points ahead.”
